Model Interview – Belco Bocoum
WE ARE SEEING AFRICAN MODELS GRACE RUNWAYS & ADVERTISING CAMPAIGNS ALL OVER THE WORLD. WE WILL BE DOING A SERIES OF INTERVIEWS, WITH SEVERAL OF THEM. OUR FIRST MODEL IS BELCO BOUCOUM, THE FACE OF VERA MOORE COSMETICS….
You are the face of Vera Moore Cosmetics, how did you land such a deal?
I landed the role as the face of Vera Moore through working at the Brownstone. My former boss Princess Jenkins, has a not for profit organization called Women In The Black, during one of their annual events “Men Cooking For Change”, Vera approached me and her exact words were “Oh my god, who are you, where did you come from. That face!!” And the rest is history.
Why did you get into modeling?
I’ve always heard people asking why I’m not modeling. In high school during my freshman year there was a casting for a fashion show. I only went to support one of my friends who was a senior. Some how before I knew what was happening I was casting for the fashion show. After that show I felt such confidence and comfort on the stage that I didn’t know was in me, from then on I was always participating in fashion shows.
If you can have a heart to heart with your parents, what would you say?
If I could have a heart to heart with my parents I would tell them that I really want to pursue fashion design as my career, its my dream and passion since I was a little girl. I would tell them that I am so lucky to have parents such as them and happy that they let me grow up back home (West Africa) for the period of time that I did because it shaped me into the woman that I am today.
What would you tell your little sister about this industry if she wants to follow in your footsteps?
I would tell her that it is not as easy as it may seem and looks is only the first step, its not everything. I would tell her to make sure its what she wants to do 100% and no matter what to make sure she has another path that she wants to pursue as back up because at the end of the day the fashion industry is always looking for the next young thing and beautiful face.
African parents put a lot of pressure on their children to get married. Do you face such pressure?
I am among the fortunate ones to have understanding parents who don’t believe in pressuring their children about marriage. My mother always told me “your degree is your first husband.” Meaning that a man can always leave you but your degree is something that will stay with you for ever.
What is the one thing most of your friends don’t know about you?
Most of my friends don’t know that I bite my lips. Its a bad habit.
Are you single?
Lol….yes I am single.
What do you look for in a man?
The first thing that I look for in a man is the level of respect he has for women, especially his own mother because the way he views and treats his mother is exactly the way that he will treat me. I love a man that is 100% genuine and honest especially about the things that he doesn’t like. Among the top things I look for in a man is how creative and romantic he can be and how mentally stable and confident he is, I am not a psychologist and can’t handle a man who is battling with who he is.
